Understanding Jewelry Certifications: GIA, IGI, AGS, and More

What Diamond and Gemstone Certifications Mean

A grading report (certificate) from an independent laboratory is the most important document accompanying a diamond or gemstone purchase. It objectively confirms the stone's specifications and quality — removing guesswork and protecting your investment.

Major Grading Laboratories

GIA (Gemological Institute of America)

The most respected and widely recognized laboratory in the world.

  • Known for: Strictest grading standards. Created the 4Cs system and the D-Z color scale.
  • Best for: Natural diamonds. The gold standard for diamond grading.
  • Reports: Diamond Grading Report (for stones 0.15ct+), Diamond Dossier (compact version), Colored Stone Reports.
  • Reputation: A GIA-certified diamond commands the highest confidence and resale value.

IGI (International Gemological Institute)

The largest independent gemological laboratory, with locations worldwide.

  • Known for: Fastest turnaround times. Strong presence in the ethically sourced diamond market.
  • Best for: Ethically sourced diamonds (widely used by ethically sourced producers). Also grades natural diamonds.
  • Note: IGI grades tend to be slightly more generous than GIA — an IGI G color might be an H at GIA. Account for this when comparing.

AGS (American Gem Society)

Known for their cut grading expertise.

  • Known for: The most detailed cut grading system. Uses 0-10 scale (0 = Ideal).
  • Best for: Buyers who prioritize cut quality above all else.
  • AGS Ideal: The strictest cut grade in the industry — more demanding than GIA Excellent.

GCAL (Gem Certification and Assurance Lab)

Growing laboratory with unique features.

  • Known for: Guaranteed grading — if your stone is re-graded differently, they pay the difference.
  • Best for: Ethically sourced diamonds. Growing in popularity.
  • Unique: Includes a light performance image showing how the diamond handles light.

HRD (Hoge Raad voor Diamant)

European laboratory based in Antwerp, Belgium.

  • Known for: Strong European presence. Part of the Antwerp World Diamond Centre.
  • Best for: Diamonds sold in European markets.

What a Certificate Includes

  • Date of examination
  • Report number (for verification on the lab's website)
  • Shape and cutting style
  • Measurements (length x width x depth in mm)
  • Carat weight
  • Color grade
  • Clarity grade
  • Cut grade (for round brilliant)
  • Polish and symmetry grades
  • Fluorescence
  • Clarity plot (diagram showing inclusions)
  • Proportions diagram

Verify Any Certificate

Every legitimate grading report has a report number that can be verified on the laboratory's website. Always verify before purchasing. If a seller claims a stone is certified but cannot provide a verifiable report, walk away.

When Certification Matters Most

  • Any diamond over 0.30 carats (especially for engagement rings)
  • Any colored gemstone represented as untreated or natural
  • Any purchase over $500
  • Any stone you plan to insure
